In our academy, training in Jiu Jitsu is not only about learning techniques—it is about cultivating a spirit. The heart of this spirit is etiquette: bowing, proper manners, awareness, and respect for the professor and fellow students. Without these, the techniques, no matter how refined, are hollow.

When a student bows before stepping on the mat, it is not a meaningless gesture. It is a reminder. It says: I leave behind my ego. I honor those who came before me. I am here to learn with humility. This act of bowing, simple yet profound, is the gateway to true practice.

The way we sit in class, the way we listen to instruction, the way we treat our training partners—these are not small details. They are the foundation of the dojo. Technique can be practiced anywhere, but the dojo is sacred because it is built on respect. Respect for the art, respect for the lineage, respect for each other. Without this, we are only imitating Jiu Jitsu, not living it.

Unfortunately, many modern trends in martial arts have drifted away from these values. Some academies emphasize medals, fame, or shortcuts, and in doing so they forget the spirit of the dojo. To me, this is a great disservice to our past teachers and to the incredible art they entrusted to us. Our teachers gave us more than techniques—they gave us a way of living. To abandon etiquette is to turn our back on their gift.

In my academy, etiquette and respect will always stand alongside technique. A strong armbar or sweep means little if it is practiced without mindfulness or humility. A student who trains with impeccable manners, who bows sincerely, who treats their partner with care, is walking the true path of Jiu Jitsu.

My vision is that our dojo becomes a place where the art is preserved not only in its technical beauty but also in its moral spirit. A place where students understand that every bow, every gesture of respect, every act of attentiveness is part of their training. This is not something extra—it is the Way itself.

Here, the best technique is not just the one that wins a match, but the one practiced with dignity, humility, and respect.
