Your First BJJ Class: What to Expect at Morumbi Camarillo
Starting Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu can feel intimidating. As someone who has dedicated over 30 years to martial arts, I understand the mix of excitement and nervousness that comes with stepping onto the mats for the first time. At Morumbi Jiu-Jitsu Academy Camarillo, we've created an environment where beginners feel welcome, supported, and set up for success from day one.
Before You Arrive
What to Wear
For your first class, comfortable athletic wear is perfect:
- T-shirt or rash guard (no zippers or pockets)
- Athletic shorts or leggings
- Bring water and a towel
- Remove all jewelry and trim your nails
If you decide to continue training, you'll want to invest in a gi (the traditional BJJ uniform), but it's not necessary for your trial class.
Arriving at the Academy
Plan to arrive 15 minutes early. This gives you time to:
- Tour our facility
- Meet your instructor
- Complete a brief waiver
- Ask any questions
- Get mentally prepared
Your First Class Structure
The Warm-Up (10-15 minutes)
Every class begins with a warm-up designed to prepare your body for training. Don't worry if you can't keep up initially—everyone was a beginner once. Common warm-up exercises include:
- Joint mobility movements
- BJJ-specific movements (shrimping, bridging)
- Light cardio
- Dynamic stretching
Technique Instruction (20-30 minutes)
This is where you'll learn the art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Your instructor will:
- Demonstrate techniques step-by-step
- Explain the principles behind each movement
- Provide individual guidance as you practice
- Answer questions and offer modifications
For beginners, we focus on fundamental positions and basic escapes—the foundation of all BJJ.
Controlled Practice (15-20 minutes)
You'll pair up with a partner to practice the techniques you've just learned. Don't worry about finding a partner—our community is welcoming, and experienced students love helping newcomers. This isn't competitive; it's cooperative learning.
Live Rolling (Optional for Beginners)
"Rolling" is BJJ sparring, where you apply techniques in a more dynamic setting. As a beginner, you're welcome to watch or participate at your comfort level. There's no pressure to roll on your first day—many students observe for their first few classes.
What Makes Morumbi Different
The Philosophy of the "Untalented Teacher"
I believe in leading by example and walking alongside my students on their journey. You won't find ego or intimidation here—only patient guidance and genuine support for your growth.
A True Community
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is often called "the gentle art," and at Morumbi, we embody this philosophy. Our students support each other's development, creating a family atmosphere where everyone succeeds together.
Structured Progression
We use a systematic curriculum that ensures you build skills progressively. You won't be thrown into the deep end—each class builds upon previous knowledge, creating a solid foundation.
Common Concerns Addressed
"I'm not in shape enough." BJJ will get you in shape! Start where you are, and progress at your own pace. Our instructors provide modifications for all fitness levels.
"I'm too old/young." We have successful students from ages 4 to 74. BJJ is truly for everyone, and our programs are tailored to different age groups and capabilities.
"I might get hurt." Safety is our top priority. We emphasize controlled training, proper technique, and respect for training partners. Injuries are less common in BJJ than in many traditional sports.
"I don't like confrontation." BJJ is about problem-solving, not aggression. It's often compared to physical chess—using leverage and technique rather than strength and force.
After Your First Class
Expect to feel:
- Physically tired but energized
- Mentally stimulated from learning new concepts
- Welcomed by a supportive community
- Excited to return and learn more
It's normal to feel overwhelmed by the amount of information. BJJ is a journey measured in years, not weeks. Focus on enjoying the process rather than mastering everything immediately.
Your Journey Starts Here
Taking that first step onto the mats is the hardest part. Once you're here, you'll discover that Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is more than a martial art—it's a path to personal growth, physical fitness, and lifelong friendships.
We invite you to experience the Morumbi difference. Schedule your free trial class today and begin your transformation through the gentle art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
Remember: Every black belt was once a white belt who refused to give up. Your journey starts with a single class.
See you on the mats!
